The League’s Environment & Sustainability program helps residents protect natural resources and advocates for fair, science-based policies. The program addresses issues like clean water, plastic pollution, and climate resilience in underserved areas through education, partnerships, and events such as cleanups and forums. These efforts increase the League’s influence on local decisions regarding public health and environmental justice.

The League of Women Voters of Charlotte Mecklenburg supports the LWVUS position on Climate Change:

The League believes that climate change is a serious threat facing our nation and planet. The League believes that an international approach to combating climate change — including through energy conservation, air pollution controls, building resilience, and promotion of renewable resources — is necessary to protect public health and defend the overall integrity of the global ecosystem. The League supports climate goals and policies that are consistent with the best available climate science and that will ensure a stable climate system for future generations. Individuals, communities, and governments must continue to address this issue, while considering the ramifications of their decisions, at all levels — local, state, regional, national, and global.
LWVCM participates in:
  • Annual Charlotte Earth Day Festival
  • Keep Charlotte Beautiful street litter pick-up program
  • Adopt-a-Stream waterway clean-up program
LWVCM has hosted speakers on a wide range of Environmental topics:
  • John Searby and Brandan Jones of Catawba Waterkeeper Foundation on work to protect the Catawba River watershed, which supports over 2.5 million people.
  • David Caldwell, Water Quality Supervisor for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Stormwater Services, a busy municipal system supporting a fast-growing population with an aging infrastructure.
  • Lisa Sorg, NC Policy Watch Environmental News Reporter on some of the most overlooked, yet pressing issues facing North Carolina (lead & copper in drinking water, agricultural waste hazards, environmental justice, and Colonial Pipeline spill clean-up).
  • Eileen Ryan and Caprice Pratt of Beyond Plastics on the health hazards caused by overuse of plastics, and the failure of the recycling model.
